Spotlight on - Edie Batstone

Edie BatstoneHaving retired from the organic market-garden she operated with her husband for 22 years, Edie now hopes to continue developing her writing and art skills. She has published her first children's book, a delightful book of poetry for young children called How to Wash a Puddle, which she both wrote and illustrated. This book of story-poems invites us each to jump into a child’s world of wonder, just as a child jumps into a puddle! We are honoured that Edie has chosen to donate a portion of the proceeds from her sales to Ryan's Well.

"My inspiration for writing this first book was my love and appreciation for children. I have been able to observe their playfulness, their curiosity, and their kindness. The poems in my book are family-based, feel-good poems. I first heard about Ryan's Well through the Branch Restaurant in Kemptville. I read the material about Ryan there, and thought that this was a tremendous example of what one small child can do, and the power of the ripple effect."

In addition to How to Wash a Puddle, Edie has just released her latest book -  How to Grow a Puddle - the second in her "Puddle Series." The catchy poems are pure fun with little buds of wisdom splashed throughout - a look at the great outdoors in the colourful 'puddle-jumping' way in which children see and appreciate it.

Apples and maple trees,
Playhouses too;
Spiders and hopping things,
Cows that go “Moo!”
Singing and swinging
And splashing along;
They’re all in this puddle;
A part of the song!

How to Grow a PuddleEdie also plans to release a third book - How to Stretch a Puddle - which will take us into a child's imagination and sense of pure fun!

Edie believes that we can each get involved by just looking around at what we do every day!

"Even the smallest gesture makes a ripple - so make them positive ripples. Talk to friends about good things that you have heard of or seen done, and charge the air around you with positive vibes. The surest way to happiness is to help someone else."
