Spotlight on - Monica
In 2008, Ryan's Well hosted an Ambassador workshop for youth interested in philanthropy, volunteerism and the work of the Foundation.
Following the workshop, Monica and several fellow workshop participants began a campaign in their community titled "Where There's a Well, There's a Way" with the hopes of raising $11,000 for a Ryan's Well project in Uganda.
"At a young age, I was able to travel to numerous countries including Russia and India. As a result of such first-hand experiences, I have learned that there are many people in this world, especially children, who are in dire need of clean water.
The “Where There’s a Well, There’s a Way” fundraiser campaign was established to provide clean water and sanitation for a community in Uganda. Funds were created by reaching out to the local and surrounding communities through education and action. By raising awareness and organising activities that allow citizens to realize the importance of clean water and sanitation, one can be motivated to make a difference. Through leadership, education and demonstration, communities in development can be strongly impacted. The Rotary Club of Brockville has especially played a key role in supporting the “Where There’s a Well, There’s a Way” campaign.
Having completed my first year of medical studies at the National University of Ireland, I have learned in a new context that water is one of the most essential elements to life – it supplies oxygen and nutrients to cells, thus playing a significant role for survival," she says.
Having recently been awarded the N.U.I Galway Presidential Award for Volunteering, Monica's goal is to 'ultimately help those who are in need and who may not necessarily be able to give back in return.'
When asked what her advice would be to others looking to get involved, she responded:
"I think that the best way to get involved is to essentially talk to people and contact organisations with whom you are unfamiliar. I’ve learned that ability is what you are capable of doing, motivation determines what you choose to do. However, it is ultimately attitude that determines how well you do. By stepping out your shell and trying different activities, one can go very far. Every opportunity counts and makes a difference."
In addition to travelling, Monica also enjoys soccer, kayaking, coaching and dance and culture.
