Bartle School

Fourth Graders (Highland Park, New Jersey)

Bartle SchoolFourth graders at Bartle School in Highland Park, New Jersey were studying how millions of people in the developing world don’t have access to safe water and sanitation. To educate others about this important issue, the class organized a “World of Water” awareness event in the school media center. Students and parents who attended the one-day event visited five different information "centers" to learn about the issue in a variety of fun and informative ways. They listened to students’ presentations, viewed informational posters, watched a short play, played computer games about water conservation and even watched a video about Ryan’s Well. In order to measure what students had learned, those who attended the "World of Water" were also asked to complete a short survey before and after attending the event. The results of the survey showed that students' knowledge of the issue grew after attending the event!

"Thank you again for taking the time to meet with our class via Skype. It was a very valuable experience for the children and I think it really made the project we are preparing very "real". They are so excited!"

To support Ryan’s Well, the class also organized a schoolwide fundraiser. They generated excitement about the fundraiser by creating posters for the hallway and making an announcement on the school's TV-based morning show. To collect donations, the class designed and distributed bags to every classroom at Bartle and encouraged fellow students to donate their spare change each day.  In addition, many students in the class found creative ways to raise money outside of the school, such as doing chores at home, selling personal artwork, and collecting donations in the local community.

As a result of their hard work and dedication, students successfully increased awareness about the worldwide water and sanitation crisis and exceeded the fundraising goal they had set! Thanks to Ryan's inspirational story, students learned first-hand how one person really can make a difference in the lives of others.
