Neepwa Area Collegiate Institute

Grade 7 Students (Neepwa, Manitoba)

Neepwa Area Collegiate InstituteAfter learning the importance of safe water in their Social Studies course and  finding out how many people do not have access to it, a group of 9 students from Neepwa Area Collegiate Institute decided to do something about it.

This "Global Action Committee" attended a conference on “Generating Momentum in Our World” by the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation. This event spurred them on to “…be the difference you want to see in the world.”

Neepwa Area Collegiate InstituteThis group started with a modest goal and set to work. Together they:

  1. Put together a PowerPoint presentation on the importance of clean water in the world, Ryan’s Well Foundation and what they planned to fundraise. The group then presented their work to all six Junior High classes!
  2. Brainstormed ideas and created a calendar of events.
  3. Baked and decorated 100 Easter cookies, and sold them at lunch hours.
  4. Neepwa Area Collegiate InstituteCreated a “world” bead with the school’s art teacher and made them in to key chains. With all the work rolling and baking, this took at least 10 lunch hours to complete! The key chains were then sold at lunch time, at band concerts and Parent-Teacher nights.
  5. A “change” fundraiser competition was held between Junior High homeroom classes over a 2 week period. Each coin was worth a certain point 'plus' or 'minus'. Therefore some kids dropped negative point coinage into other homeroom jars so that they would lose points! This was a very successful fundraiser and the homeroom with the most points won an ice-cream cake donated by Dairy Queen!

Neepwa Area Collegiate InstituteThe students' teacher said: What a great learning event for all of us! Public speaking practice, newspaper article writing, time commitments to honour, and group dynamics to work on all made this an event these kids won’t forget. Their exposure to other’s needs in the world has been realized and I hope they will continue to follow this young humanitarian's path. PLUS money was raised for a worthwhile cause in Uganda – clean water!!!!  Thank you for the great web-site. The educational areas and information sections were easy to use at our grade level. Congratulations on the great work Ryan’s Well Foundation is doing.

You can make a difference, too!
Donate, Fundraise or Raise Awareness.
