“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.” – Jim Valvano
We often talk about the impact the global water and sanitation crisis has on women and children – but everyone living without access to clean water, improved sanitation or hygiene education suffers. For those living in areas unaffected by the global water and sanitation crisis, it impacts us all in different ways.
As Ryan’s father, Mark Hreljac has always been an integral part of the Ryan’s Well Foundation. He’s travelled countless miles over the years either accompanying Ryan during speaking engagements or overseas to visit Ryan’s Well projects and Project Partners. After visiting projects for numerous years, many partners refer to him as “the chief” – a sign of respect in their communities.
Serving as a police officer by day, Mark took it upon himself to learn all he could about water, wells, sanitation and the challenges of working overseas in developing countries. He’s also had many experiences with various cultures and remote areas where Ryan’s Well supports projects.
Mark has since combined his experiences in both policing and international development and currently works in Sudan with the UN Mission and other police officers from around the world.
This Father’s Day – we celebrate Mark and other fathers around the world who – every day – help inspire, educate, guide, protect and nurture the children of tomorrow!
This year, choose a gift that helps give back and honour your Dad, Grandpa or father-figure with a tribute in his name!
Many thanks to Jordan Thoms for his contributions to this blog post!
