Kenya – The Samburu Clean Water Project Phase 1

Project Info:

Local Partner: The Samburu Project
Location: Wamba Region, Samburu District, Kenya
Fundraising Goal: $12,500  we have reached our goal!
Project Activities: The Wamba Region is a trading centre approximately 435 km north of Nairobi beneath the Matthews Mountain Range. This semi-arid environment receives sporadic rainfall of approximately 400 mm annually.  Wamba is one of six administrative divisions in the Samburu District, home to traditionally nomadic pastoralists. Currently, water and sanitation access is nearly non-existent. Women walk up to 20km each day in some cases to search for water. Water sources that are found are often unclean and unsafe coming from gaping hand dug wells in disrepair or gulleys that have been contaminated by wildlife and livestock. There is no access to improved sanitation. The following activities are planned to change these facts:

  • Drilling and construction of one well with Afridev handpump
  • Establishment of the community water source committee
  • Hygiene and sanitation workshop with the Sarara Womens Group and ongoing monthly training as the community becomes more familiar with their new well.
