Léo Shea Butter Cooperative
The region of Léo in southern Burkina Faso is home to the Union des Groupements de Productrices de Produits de Karite (UGPPK) - a women's shea butter production cooperative. Approximately 3,000 women members of this cooperative work towards growing shea trees in their home villages and processing it into a marketable product at the cooperative processing area. The women of UGPPK are working hard to support and care for their families, often having their young children with them when they visit the processing area. In partnership with UGPPK, Ryan’s Well is supporting access to safe water and sanitation to improve health and well-being for the communities of Léo and for the women when they are working at the processing cooperative.

Our partners at UGPPK have identified 36 villages, the home villages of their 3,000 members, in need of water and sanitation access along with the need for approximately 4 wells and latrines at the cooperative itself (Phase 1 completed and Phase 2 now underway). Access to sanitation will greatly improve the working conditions for the women at the processing centre and for their children who often accompany them. By providing safe water access in their home villages, members and their families will benefit from improved health enabling them to participate fully in education, income generating activities and childcare. UGPPK also offers community hygiene training and literacy programs for it’s members and their children – improved health and well-being through water, sanitation, education and empowerment.
