Project Activities: Dr. Jane Goodall has been a great source of support and inpiration for Ryan’s Well for many years. We are honoured to have Dr. Goodall as one of our longtime Patrons and happy to announce a water project in collaboration with her incredible work in Tanzania.
The Jane Goodall Tendaguru Wildlife Trust aims to protect endangered wildlife habitats in southern Tanzania. People of this region are engaged in every step of the process in order to create a sustainable environment and improve livelihoods. It is for the people of this region that the Trust seeks to improve conditions, reduce poverty, enhance environmental and human security through sustainable resource management in seven area villages. Access to safe water and sanitation are essential elements to building sustainable communities and improving lives for the future.
The project area, south of Dar es Salaam on the eastern coast of Tanzania, is a predominantly rural area with over 95% of the population engaging in subsistence farming. There are no permanent rivers or water sources that can provide reliable water access. Women often must carry water for 5 to 6 hours or longer depending on the season. The aim of this project is to provide more reliable and safe sources of water supply, accessible to a wider population.
The following activities are planned to reach this goal:
- Drilling and construction of a borehole
- Construction and installation of a solar powered water pumps and solar panels as required with no other electrical supply is available
- Water purification sand filter system and pipe network to provide access to the village
- Community mobilization activities for training and maintenance
- The well will provide safe water for an estimate of 1,500 men, women and children
